This week my travels find me at home … and not just at home physically but also mentally. After weeks of change and evolution and re-adjusting, this new normal of digital leadership finally feels like home.

This week my travels find me … at home. (Although I did make the trek just now from my backyard to my home office to write this post.) As I sit at my desk, in the home I’ve been working out of for weeks now—just like you—I’m reminded of the concept that the bigger the challenge, the greater the opportunity. And we’re facing one of the biggest challenges our industry and world has ever known.

This week my travels find me … at home (perhaps next week we’ll rethink this opening line). A good family friend of mine, Don O’Neill, sent me an interesting article this week, and I took some time to read through it and would like to summarize the leadership lessons I learned from it.

This week my travels find me at home, just as you are. And while we’re at home we can still work diligently on creating better versions of ourselves and honing our abilities to lead. I’ve been listening to a great book, “The Leadership Challenge” by James M. Kouzes (Dean’s Executive Fellow of Leadership, Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University) and Barry Z. Posner (Dean of Leavey School of Business, Santa Clara University). The book is now in its sixth edition and the book is so good that every time a new edition came out, I started from the beginning and re-listened to it. In fact, the ideas put forth by Kouzes and Posner about effective leadership during challenging times have never been more applicable.

This week my travels find me exactly where you are – home, in virtual meetings and conference calls as we take the current situation with COVID-19 one step at a time, one day at a time and as a collective, working together to find solutions for a brighter tomorrow.

This week my travels found me in Nashville for the 2020 Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Sales Convention. Against the backdrop of a resilient Music City, 6,000 attendees celebrated with colleagues and friends. But more about that later …

This week my travels find me planning, strategizing and fulfilling the commitments I made for the month of March. One of those commitments was completed on Tuesday when I presented to 100 Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Michigan Real Estate agents as part of the brokerage’s Sales Mastery Series.

This week my travels found me first in Minneapolis for a HomeServices of America board meeting. From Minneapolis it was off to Des Moines, Iowa for dinner with HomeServices of Iowa CEO Kim Bakey and her management team. On Tuesday morning, I presented a keynote on mindset/routine to the company and then I presented the West Coast Offense for Geometric Growth to the management team.

This week my travels found me first in Denver for a meeting with the team at Kentwood Real Estate and president/CEO Gretchen Rosenberg. The theme of the meeting was “Rooted in Excellence” and I spoke about creating an unstoppable mindset and routine.
